About the job

What you can expect from Horl

As our first Finance team member in the US, you will play a pivotal role in bringing our US accounting in-house from our external tax firm. You will own the day-to-day financial operations and monthly closes while directly shaping the financial foundation of our growing US subsidiary. If you thrive on building scalable processes and want to grow into a broader Finance role for our North American business, this is your opportunity.

What you can expect from the role

  • Core Accounting & Close: Independently manage the day-to-day full-cycle accounting and monthly closes under US GAAP, including journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, intercompany reconciliations with our German headquarters, and reporting packages.
  • E-Commerce & Channel Reconciliation: Oversee and reconcile all revenue channels (Amazon US/CA/MX settlement files, Shopify, Adyen, PayPal, and wholesale accounts). Manage clearing accounts, payout-to-bank reconciliations, and month-end revenue cut-offs.
  • Sales Tax & Compliance: Take full ownership of US Sales Tax compliance via Avalara (filings, nexus monitoring, state-by-state tax payable reconciliations) and assist the German team with Canadian GST/HST.
  • AP, AR & Banking: Handle accounts payable, execute payment runs via US banks, and manage accounts receivable and collection processes for wholesale clients.
  • US-Payroll Management: Coordinate the US payroll with our external payroll provider - ensuring accurate data submission, reviewing payroll runs, booking entries, and reconciling tax and benefit accounts.
  • Inventory & COGS: Evaluate and reconcile inventory and Cost of Goods Sold (COGS), including Goods-in-Transit and intercompany transfer pricing with our parent company in Germany.
  • Process Optimization & External Partner: Act as the primary interface for our external US tax firm for year-end financials, tax returns, and audit inquiries. Build, document, and automate streamlined processes for our newly internalized accounting system.

What you bring to the role

  • Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration with 4–6 years of hands-on corporate accounting experience (not strictly agency/audit firm).
  • US GAAP & Close Ownership: Proven experience independently managing month-end closes under US GAAP.
  • Sales Tax & Avalara: Strong knowledge of US Sales Tax (filings, multi-state nexus evaluation, state registrations) and hands-on, productive experience using Avalara.
  • Operations & Banking: Practical experience in AP/AR, payment processing via US banks, and managing payroll through external providers.
  • ERP & Advanced Spreadsheets: Proficient with modern ERP systems during month-end closes and Power-User skills in Excel/Google Sheets (Pivot tables, XLOOKUP, handling large export files).
  • Analytical Mindset & AI: Excellent skill in cross-referencing multi-source data to reconcile differences down to the cent. Comfortable incorporating modern AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude) to streamline routines and analyze data.
  • Process Documentation: Ability to structure and document processes clearly so third parties can easily understand and execute them.
  • Languages: Fluent in English (German is a plus).
Nice to have:
  • Active CPA license or currently pursuing CPA certification.
  • Specialized training or experience in Multi-State Taxation.
  • Prior experience working in a US subsidiary of a European parent company.

What we can offer you

  • Growth & Impact: As the pioneer finance hire in the US, you are not just maintaining books - you are building an operational backbone. High performers have the mid-term perspective to grow into a broader Finance role for our US entity.
  • International & Entrepreneurial Culture: Work closely with an ambitious, dynamic European market leader (HORL) bringing premium craftsmanship and innovation to the US market.
  • Ownership & Trust: Enjoy high autonomy in setting up your workspace, optimizing workflows, and implementing tools that make your daily work efficient.
  • Competitive Compensation & Benefits: As a family business, we are committed to ensuring our team members feel their best. That's why we've made great benefits available. We cover childcare costs for your preschool children of up to $1,000 per month and a 401(k) plan with employer matching. We also offer six days of paid sick leave and 15 paid days of annual vacation - in addition to 10 paid national holidays. Thanks to our flexible working hours and the remote working set up, you can organize your life as you wish.

Make it yours!

About us

HORL – from Germany to the kitchens of the world

We at HORL® are driven by our pioneering spirit to create products for all eternity. Our roots are in the Black Forest of Germany, the source of our endless inspiration. It is here where our ideas for industry-leading products are born, with unrivaled innovative strength and quality. Every one of our products is perfectly conceived and precisely manufactured, made to be forever at your side. We are passionate about enriching people's lives, creating incredible moments, and becoming an integral part of kitchens around the world.

Our story began in 2016, when father and son Otmar and Timo Horl first developed their revolutionary rolling knife sharpener. This entirely innovative system makes it possible for anyone to sharpen their knives, and with it, cutting becomes a true pleasure. We're thrilled that our invention is now inspiring people across the globe! As our team grows, we're continuing to write the HORL story together, and we're excited to inspire more and more people in Germany and internationally.
